Just to demonstrate the extent of the government (AKA “big brother”) at work in our public school system, I was having lunch the other day with a friend living in the Philadelphia suburbs who has a seven year old boy. He recently had a birthday celebration and a birthday party. Sounds pretty normal so far.
I was amazed to hear that it is against school regulations to have a birthday party and invite individual classmates (boys in this case) unless every boy in the class is invited. He was given a litany of justifications (impressionable age, feeling left out, we don’t want to hurt feelings bla bla bla) for this overreaching policy. The parents were pressured into inviting the entire classroom of boys.
While I don’t necessarily disagree with the justifications, and on the surface (as most liberal policies do) this sounds reasonable and we all get a warm feeling inside. I know, I know, this this is no mortal sin. But I strongly disagree with the public school system telling parents who can and cannot come to my child’s birthday party. I think this energy is misplaced. Big governnment at work once again. With all the money that flows into the schools today, why don’t they just focus on the math and science which seem to be our nation’s key opportunity for growth and success? They don’t seem to be able to raise the math and science scores, but at least they can help me plan the party.
