Food Police–Taxes and Regulation

»Posted by on Apr 21, 2010 in Healthcare Reform, Life, Politics | 0 comments

Salt, sugar, trans-fats, have all been in the news lately as Michelle O leaves her backyard vegetable garden and takes to the mean streets on her crusade against body fat.  In her wake, there’s a deluge of  federal, state, and local law initiatives rising up against obesity.  What I refer to as the “food police” others call progress.  OK, we are probably the fattest developed nation in the world.  We have access to a wide variety of colas, cakes, breads, cookies, candy bars, chips, carbs and sugars limited only by our grocery budget. But never fear, our great protector and omnipotent caretaker, the all knowing, all seeing, government will swoop in and save us all from plaque buildup, strokes, and a wide assortment of heart ailments. How will...

March 12, 2010 will mark a new milestone in my 57 year old chronology. It will be my last day at work (most of you know who I have had the privilege to work for) after 31 years with the company. Right now I’m referring to it as Phase III for a lack of a better title. Phase I was my Growing Up years (the immature years), Phase II was my career years (also the immature years), and now Phase III. I’m all grown up (that depends on who you ask) and the path ahead is not marked.  I’ve never been here before.  Of course, it’s never been well marked. Wow!  It’s been a great journey.  I started this career as a sales representative in Nashville October, 1978.  I remember this time of life so distinctly and clearly.  I had married Kathy in July of that same...

Clint: I have a question. I like Fox News but I’m trying to figure out how can I get more Fox news. I know it comes in on the TV, but is there any other place I can get Fox News? Mammograms

»Posted by on Nov 18, 2009 in Healthcare Reform, Pharmaceutical Industry, Politics | 1 comment

The USPSTF, (United States Preventive Services Task Force) a panel of independent medical experts but part of the US Department of Health and Human Services, said it was recommending against annual mammograms for women between the ages of 40 and 49, saying the risks outweighed the benefits from earlier screening. That …announcement, which goes against a trend of recommending increased screening by cancer agencies, has left many confused. This is especially true since the American Cancer Society and the ACOG (American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology) disagree with the recommendation. Now honestly, If you are a woman reading this, how do you feel about the recent recommendation by the government panel of “medical experts?” Guys, how do you...

Have You Had Your Flu Shot?

»Posted by on Oct 26, 2009 in Healthcare Reform | 1 comment

There’s a lot of hoopla right now about the so-called H1N1 virus or as mid westerners who raise hogs for a living hate to call it, the “swine flu.”  Some people are reluctant to be immunized against the flu by taking the vaccine shot or nasal spray.  Today marks another anniversary of  the end of small pox throughout the world.  Let’s be rational and not emotional.  Think about polio, measles, mumps, pneumonia, and many other diseases which have been practically eliminated by vaccines.  Vaccines are our best defense against infectious diseases, but vaccines may not be 100% safe or effective. Our bodies react differently to vaccines. Some people may have side effects after vaccination, and some may not be completely protected from...

Million “Man/ Woman” March

First of all let me apologize to my “thousands” of loyal followers (ok , both of you) for being gone so long.  But I’m back and now ready to leave again.  So much going on in Obamaland I don’t know where to begin.  As an overall observation, I’m thinking back at how the Community Organizer (AKA, BO) was going to bring peace, love, prosperity and cooperation to all.  He was going to “change the tone” in Washington.  He was going to bring Democrats and Republicans together.  There was to be peace and harmony forever more.  The hatred and racism of the past would be buried forever as we elected our first black President. Oh well.  So much for promises from a politician.  In my short 49 years, (OK, 56 short years),...
