Are You On Drugs?
If you are reading this, you’re probably taking some type of prescription medication or have done so at some time in your life. We Americans love the products the big bad pharmaceutical companies make, but feel less favorable towards the companies themselves because we feel we’re being ripped off by high prices.
Meet Michele Bachman
Elected in 2006, Congresswoman Michele Bachmann is the first Republican woman to be elected to the U.S. House of Representatives from Minnesota. In only her first term, Congresswoman Bachmann developed a reputation as a “principled reformer” who stays true to her conservative beliefs while pushing for real reform of the broken ways of Washington. I recently heard her interviewed about our current ecomonic problems and was very impressed with her thoughtfulness on the dangers of continuing our US debt due to overspending. I think we’ll be hearing a lot more from this lady in the future. That is unless the media tries to “Palinize” her for her brains and good looks.
It’s Time for Obama to Govern
I can’t always put my finger on it, but I know when someone is real and I know when someone is plastic and fake. Right now I have this awful sense that Obama is so. . so Hollywood, so star struck. He seems to be campaigning for the next election. Psssst..Mr. President, the election is over, yip yip yipee, you won! Now would you stop campaigning on Leno and talking about your sweet 16 bracket picks? Will you begin to actually do what you were elected to do–GOVERN? Did you see Obama’s interview on 60 minutes last Sunday? Steve Kroft actually ask him if he was “punch drunk” because Obama had this silly chuckle and grin every time he answered a question about our banking collapse woes and economic shakedown.
Human Life
Science has everything to say about what is possible. Science has nothing to say about what is permissible.
President Obama wants science to determine the perilous path forward for stem cell research. I thought CK’s comment was particularly poignant. Please take a moment and read his insightful article. Science can provide many of the facts and perhaps document evidence. However, decisions for protecting life of the unborn needs to be made prayerfully and in light of scriptures, not just the biology book.
I.O.U.S.A.
This video is the trailer for a great documentary on the US’s addiction to debt. There’s also a great 30 minute preview on youtube.
Warning: Perfectionism May Be Hazardous to Your Health Part II
Living under these rules can also lead to a chronic sense of failure, indecision, shame, and increased criticism of others. The perfectionist is rarely satisfied with their performance. By setting unrealistic standards the perfectionist develops a harsh self critical attitude which contributes to a low self esteem and fear of negative social evaluation (others will not accept me or like me). They tend to overgeneralize, feel out of control which spirals down to a sense of helplessness.
Therapy includes helping the perfectionist reframe negative self-talk and “rules” that have been established about perfection (I must be perfect, You must be perfect). It can also be helpful to understand how and why these rules were put into place to begin with. Most rules of this type were framed and developed in early childhood to obtain love, attention, and approval. It’s important that family and friends provide an accepting and loving environment.
Obama’s Gutter Ball–Sans Teleprompter
Don’t know if you’ve noticed lately, but the pop culture icon Barak Obama, sans teleprompter, is an embarrassment. His latest gaffe was on Jay Leno (yes the President of the United States of America on late night comedy) last Thursday night. He quipped that his low bowling score of 129 qualified him for the “special olympics.” This “off-handed” (read sans teleprompter) comment showed a lack of respect for handicapped athletes and manifested Obama’s true nature. This followed his gaffe at the White House on St. Patricks day during an after hours reception for Prime Minister of Ireland, in which there was a mix up in teleprompter scripts. Mr. Suave, articulate, messiah, anointed one, the oratorical genius, mistakenly read the script that was intended for the Prime Minister. Mr. Elegant literally thanked himself for hosting the reception for the PM before he realized what had happened. It’s a party Mr. President. Do you really need a teleprompter?
Springtime in Philadelphia :(
Maybe it’s your trip to the local Dairy Queen in your area, Baskin Robbins, or Ben and Jerry’s, but in Philadelphia and surrounding areas, the first day of spring is celebrated by long lines at Rita’s Italian Water Ice. For those of you from the hinterlands of the south and west, Rita’s Water ice resembles micronized, fruit flavored, shaved (snow cones for those of you in Tennessee and Georgia) in a cup, with a spoon provided at no charge.
It’s funny, but I’ve never really adapted to these cold long winters of Philly. Today was the first day of spring, it’s cloudy, 41 degrees and not a green leaf in sight. Yet, the Philadelphia faithful stood in long lines today at Rita’s to welcome the hopeful arrival of warmer weather. By enjoying a chilly cup of …well…ice?
Warning: Perfectionism May be Hazardous to your Health;
Do people make you feel depressed, angry, worried? Are others completely annoyed by you? Do others annoy you? Well it could be that they’re complete nit wits. On the other hand, it could be that you are a perfectionist and living under an umbrella of perfectionistic rules that you set for yourself and for others. When these rules are broken, you feel angry and depressed. Well. You could banish the nit wits or you could try and reframe your thinking about perfectionism.
Psychologists have identified at least 2 categories or types of depressive vulverability which form the basis for most clinical depression. One form is highly related to a feeling of loss or over dependency (loss of loved one, loss of things). The other form is related to intense self criticism, guilt, and an extreme need to achieve due to perfectionistic standards.
What Are You Telling Yourself About (shhhh Sex?)
Now that I have your undivided attention….a recent study published in Cognitive Therapy Research investigated the differences between individuals with and without sexual dysfunction on the automatic thought content (WAYTY–here and forever more known as What Are You Telling Yourself) during sexual activity. Results indicated that both men and women experiencing sexual dysfunction (loss of libido, inability to reach orgasm or achieve erection) report significantly more negative thoughts during sexual activity compared to sexually healthy individuals.
